Sources of Strength
Sources of Strength is a youth mental health and suicide prevention program that harnesses peer social networks to promote healthy norms and culture, reducing risks such as suicide, violence, bullying, and substance misuse. Our mission is to prevent adverse outcomes by fostering well-being, resilience, and a sense of belonging. Instead of focusing solely on risk factors, Sources of Strength takes an upstream approach that builds support systems for young people to rely on during difficult times. The program collaborates and integrates various initiatives, such as leadership, diversity, and academic programs. Sources of Strength supports staff to recognize their role as connectors for students and provides training that enhances personal wellness and professional support skills
A core component is the recruitment and training of diverse Peer Leaders and Adult Advisors, who engage students across different social groups. Peer Leaders help spread the program’s message through interactive, fun activities that incorporate students’ interests like music, art, and social media. Ongoing consultation ensures that Sources of Strength leaders stay engaged and supported in their roles.
